Homemade Soft Pretzels

Ok, so there are times and days I amaze myself….today is one of those days.  After a blissfully amazing morning at church, I have decided today I will partake in “Carb Fest”!  Who doesn’t love those soft pretzels you get at the mall??  They call my name every time, but I honestly can’t remember when I had one last.  Well, I have found a very easy way to make them at home. 


1  1/2 cups warm water

1 T Sugar

2 T Salt

2  1/4 tsp instant yeast

4  1/2 cups A.P. Flour

2 T Unsalted butter


Spray oil

10 cups Water

2/3 cup Baking Soda

2 T Melted Butter

Coarse Salt, Cinnamon/sugar, garlic salt


In a stand mixer bowl mix together water, yeast, sugar and salt. Mix together for 30 seconds.  Add flour and butter, use hook attachment and kneed for 4-5 minutes. 

Remove from bowl and place into a large bowl sprayed with oil (I use Pam). Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap and set in a warm place for about an hour or until doubled in size. 

Preheat oven to 425.  Line 2-3 baking sheets with parchment paper. Set aside.

Bring about 10 cups of water to boil with baking soda in large sauce pan.

Spray countertop with oil spray and take 1/5 of the dough and turn out and roll into a one inch rope.  Cut rope into 1 inch pieces.  (Unless you want to twist into pretzel shape, then do that at this point). 

Using a slotted spoon take approximately 10 pretzel pieces and place into boiling water.  Boild for about 30 seconds, turning with slotted spoon throughout.  Remove pieces from water with slotted spoon and place onto parchment covered baking sheets.  Brush the top of each piece with melted butter and sprinkle with topping of choice.  Bake 10-12 minuted or until cooked throughout and golden brown.  Remove from oven and brush again with butter and sprinkle with topping of choice.  These are ridiculously delicious!!  Enjoy!
